Do we see a chance of current CORRUPT political system being changed in the near future”?

I held myself back couple of times but this time I couldn’t and decided to write about the corrupt political system and the kind of people entering into the politics. My question is “do we see a chance of current CORRUPT political system being changed in the near future”?

Before I touch upon the core issue would like to make a disclaimer : My views are not in favor/against any person or a political party. If I refer to a party or an individual it is just based on my limited knowledge and I could be wrong as well.

In the last few months we hear a lot about corruption and the politicians involvement in it. For me it looks there is no boundary for corruption; it is there in all the political parties no matter whether they are in power or out of power. May be the ratio is less if they are not in power. There are few people who still have some values and are trying not to be corrupt (like Sureshkumar, a minister in the current govt). If we recall the recent incidents in Karnataka, I get a feeling that is this the state which was ruled by a politician like Sri S Nijalingappa who couldn’t even afford to construct a house for his own? Many of the current politician talks only in terms of crores and we have seen many of the MLAs selling themselves for 50-60 Cr.

Scams which are currently being exposed are in the tune of thousands of crores and there is no limit to it. We now know where the tax payers money is going. It is either with politicians or with bureaucrats. If this is not being stopped then I don’t see a chance that a common man get into politics/government jobs.

Just to give two examples from the recent elections which I have seen closely. Gramapanchayat elections were held few months ago and most of the candidates contested were in the age bracket of 25-32 years old. These guys have neither studied properly nor struggled in their life at least to earn some bucks. They just spent the hard earned money of their parents, some guys lost the election and some guys won. I asked the guys who have won the election, their single point of agenda is to make some money. It hurts a lot if you listen the way “National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme” is being miss used by these guys. In future these guys will move from grampanchayat to district level and then to state and national level. Do you expect anything better from these guys when they become MLAs/MPs?

To quote from the recent BBMP election; if you had followed the BBMP election and most importantly the candidate selection. It was such a tough competition and tickets were literally sold. Most candidates (men/women) are involved in real-estate and they made hell lot of money through illegal land grabbing. I am personally very close (don’t want to name them) to two of the candidates who won the BBMP election; both were/are into real estate and I tried to closely observe them to see how they make money; first thing they do is, get the project sanctioned and award them to their family member/friend companies. Secondly they identify all the govt land and buy a piece of property nearby and grab the portion of govt land illegally. There are several other ways they make money and keep it ready for next elections.

Since people join politics with the lust of making money and to expand their legacy; there is no chance that the system could be improved. I hope that the media plays a bigger role in the coming years and expose every illegal activities of politicians so that they run away from politics as they can't face voters!

Just to say thank you to my friends......

There are two reasons why I am sharing this information through my blog;

1. To thank all my friends who supported me in this social cause
2. To spread what we did!! may be you can do the same as well!!

Without spending too much effort on re-writing the whole story, I would like to take you directly to the part of e-mail which i sent across to my friends seeking their help for my initiative.

========================================================
Dearest Friends,

It was on 24th June I visited my native place (Chickapadasalagi) after a gap of 3 months. Most of you already know about my village and it doesn’t require any introduction. However I would like mention few facts that it has around 3000+ electoral population and there are 1000+(not all from my village but few come from neighboring villages) students studying from class 1st to 10th.

On the way to my native I was thinking on to do something in the village which should benefit the young and bright student community. During my four days of stay I noticed that there was only 2 hours of power supply per day and which took me to my old school days. You guys don’t believe the way we use to struggle because of power cut and how we managed to study during night. Each one of us had our own lantern (use to make it using medicine bottle and putting a thread into it and finally fill with kerosene). The lantern use to omit so much of carbon that the next day morning we could notice the carbon deposit on the dresses which we wore. Can you guys imagine the amount of carbon dioxide we were inhaling every day? This was not the case of one day but at least for the whole summer that’s our peak exam season.

Believe me even now the situation is same and students use the same kind of lantern. Finally an idea flashed on to my mind thinking whether it makes sense if we provide a solar lighting system.

I met a solar lighting system dealer and enquired about the same. He said a system which can support up to 4 bulbs would cost 16 to 18K. There are two schools (1st std to 7th std and 8th to 10th) and may be to begin with we can provide it for high school (8th to 10th) students.

Now coming to the point, since 16-18K is quite a big amount which I can’t afford on my own. With a hesitant mind I would like to ask you guys to contribute some amount which I am planning to do for the social cause. Kindly note that I have not taken this initiative for my personal gain, I promise do it with utmost transparency and commitment.

If this is successful then my future idea is to start a charity where in we all will be members and at least due to this we might get a chance to see each other to do some charity work. But this might take few months as it involves lots of administrative work but mean time we can form a group and start discussing and what can be the road map..etc.

Also if the student community finds it good then we can meet the Government of Karnataka officials and explain the benefits of this initiative. We can request them to implement this initiative state wide under government umbrella.

Guys, this is my first initiative and I hope you all will support me and be part of this initiative. I have discussed this with Hareesh(Dumma) and he told me its good initiative and we should do it.

'If people like us don't do something for society, who will?

======================================================

As a result of this e-mail, within a week we were able to collect the required money to install the solar lamp and we did this in the month of February which was very crucial for students to prepare for the exams.

After the installation, i visited the hostel and I was happy to see students studying under the lamps provided by us.

Currently there are around 30-40 students (studying from 1 to 10th, ITI, DEd) who are getting benefited with this.

You might think, there are many companies who are into social activity and we can contribute directly to them. But I don't beleive that they can go to every corner of the country. The way to do is; if you come across any such need in any place you are from, just see what best you can do and try to help the people who are in need. I HOPE YOU ALL WILL DO SOMETHING!!

May be with our earnings we can't eliminate the poverty but at least we can be happy that GOD has given us an opportuinty to serve fellow human being to an extent.

Before I close my blog, I would like to thank my friends who stood by me and helped this initiative.

Corruption in Employment; we are responsible for it!!!

Recently an incident happened in Karnataka wherein a minister has to resign due to irregularities while recruiting staff for medical colleges. When we debate on “who is responsible for corruption” it is chicken and egg story. We common people always say, it’s the politicians and bureaucrats who are corrupt. On the other side we forget that we(people) also have equal share in it.

I would like to narrate an incident which happened 1.5 years back; a cousin of mine applied for a job (Line man) in HESCOM or one of the power companies in Karnataka ( I don’t remember exactly). He has done ITI in Electrical with very good marks (around 78%) and was a very able candidate. Usually in our family everyone asks for my advice and my cousin as well called me up and informed that he has applied for this job. Especially people in north Karnataka respect govt jobs a lot and they go to any extent (in terms of bribe) to get it, I am bit embarrassed to say this but it’s the TRUTH . I have seen this closely in my native and as well from nearby villages and very well aware how it works.

As soon as they apply for the job, first thing they do is find out some agents and check out the possibilities and make a deal. These agents are some political party workers who have not even seen the schools in their life (maybe there are few who are studied but not passed the exams) and imagine they deal the jobs even up to KAS level. They dress up very nicely and walk with files all the time. Literally speaking; it’s their full time job.

Now coming back to my cousin incident, like most of his friends he was also negotiating with an agent and they had made a deal for Rs 100, 000. If he doesn’t get a job then the agent has agreed to return rupee Rs 95, 000 keeping Rs 5,000 as operational cost. Assuming an agent makes a deal with hundred guys and he earns 5 lakhs as part of operational cost  that too non taxable . Before making a payment my cousin called me up and told that he is giving money to such and such guy. I asked my cousin to wait for few days and told him that I will talk to my friend father who was in a very good position in HESCOM. I walked into their house asking for an opinion and if there is any chance that he can help. Uncle told me that, the agents will cheat and asked me not to pay the money. He also said, it’s very transparent process now and no bribe works. He took the application number and interview dates and I left their house. I made a call to my cousin and told him not to pay the money. Whereas a friend of his went ahead and made the payment. Also my concern was that, cousin family is poor and his parents work as daily laborers and arranging 1L was a big deal for them. And it’s not easy to get the money back from these agents, they give you a hell lot of trouble before they return the money. I know some people who even left the money with agents as they couldn’t catch them ( a close friend of mine has lost almost 3.2L, he was trying for a govt job after engineering).

The selection procedure was like; they first do a physical round, short list the candidates based on the academic marks and then call for a final round of mock interview which carries 25 marks. These 25 marks makes difference because it’s in the bureaucrats hand and they can award the marks whatever the way they want. I think they keep some loop wholes like this which increases the possibility of bribe. After a wait of six months the results were published in the internet and unfortunately my cousin was not selected but his friend name was there in the list. I am not sure if that guy got selected because he went through an agent but it was evident that my cousin had better marks than this guy in the academics but he failed to get the job. I felt bad for my decision and after that decided not to advice anyone.

Now we have an environment where in we have to compete with the money and not with the marks/skills to land in govt job. I feel until we(people) change our mindset, I don’t see any chance of eradicating corruption. Instead of blaming politicians/bureaucrats, if we decide not to bribe then the whole system will change and it helps to create a better society. I speak about this a lot and try to create awareness among people whenever I get a chance to address public gatherings in my native. I request you all to do the same whenever you get an opportunity. This is what the max we educated can do I believe.

A concept I liked in Germany!!!

During my earlier visits to Germany most of the time I stayed in a city called Mannheim and never had a chance to experience the village side of Germany and more importantly on the farming side. The other reason was that all my past visits were during winter time and i couldn't see anything in the farm field.

This time I am lucky enough to get an opportunity to travel during summer and that too for a long duration.......... thanks to SAP ..
I stay in a village called Nussloch which is around 10KM from Heidelberg. The village is surrounded by lots of farm field and was impressed by the way farming is done here. Many times my parents and people at my village were asking how the farming is done in Germany? what they grow? how the farmers live? do they have animals in the farm field?.....many questions and this time I am happy that I have lots of information to share with them.
Now will come to an interesting concept, one day while talking to our house owner, I casually asked them where do they buy vegetables. He said, we don't buy the vegetables. I was surprised by this answer, then i asked do you eat meat all the time? He said, NO, we eat vegetables all the time but we grow them in our garden. I was again surprised and asked him are you a farmer? He said, I am not a farmer but have rented  small portion of land where in we grow the vegetables and fruits. This was very interesting for me and I visited their garden one day to see how it is and what they grow.I saw almost all the vegetables (Onions, carrot, cauliflower, tomato, beans, potato, sweet potato .......) and fruits (apples, cherry, grapes.....) in the garden. Due to long winter season they only grow these vegetables during summer, these vegetables are stored in a cold storage and consumed for rest of the year. Amazing right? You can see some pictures below taken at their garden.

A small garden of my house owner

Just to outline how the concept works:
  • Govt has created has mad small plots at the outskirts of the village
  • People can approach the government and rent the plot.
  • One need to pay some yearly subscription fees for it
I feel this is an interesting concept and would make sense if implemented in India as well. Especially this could be useful for the middle class retired people where in they get very less pension but vegetable prices are increasing every year. Also its kind of a time pass for them and they keep themselves busy doing some work in their garden.
If you as well find it interesting and if you can influence the government/government officials on this concept, kindly go ahead and explain them the concept!!!!

Sometimes the decisions made with right intention take us to worst situation!!

We have come across many people who have gone bankrupt though they had made some decisions with right intention. I had seen one such family in my native who are our close friends. It’s a joint family of 7 members with 3 sons and 2 daughter. Both the daughters were already married. The head of the family is a close friend of my dad.

They were a very happy family until 1993, during this time they made a decision to lay the pipe line from Krishna river to their field. If I am right, they didn't have any money at hand and decided to take money from local lenders at village instead of going for bank loan which they thought could delay their project. They were so eager to get the pipe line done as early as possible so that they can start growing sugar cane. But we should note that the local lenders usually charge more interest, I feel this was their first mistake but it was the only option for them to complete the project in time.

The project was completed just in a month time and they decided to grow sugarcane. They had a plan in place to repay the loan amount in one year after they sell the crop. But unfortunately they didn't estimate the amount they had to invest to grow the crop in next one year. Sugar cane crop usually gives the yield in 10-12 months time frame and after that you can cut it and send it to make jaggery or sugar . During this one year time frame they borrowed some more money to manage the additional farming expenses, worked very hard for the whole year and they managed produce very good jaggery.

It was a happy time for them as the yield was best during that time compared to other farmers. But the time was so bad and suddenly the jaggery rate went down. There is a conception that the jaggery rate goes up during Navratri/Dipavali time due to high demand. They decided not to sell immediately and instead wait until the festival season starts. This added some 3 months of wait time to get the returns and on the other side the interest was going up.

They finally sold the jaggery after 3 months but there was only a marginal increase in the rates and they couldn't get the expected money from their first year crop. It happened that they could only managed to pay half of the interest amount accrued and the remaining interest got added to principal amount and next year interest cycle started. Mean time they borrowed some more money to manage the additional farming expenses and to support their elder son education.

This continued for almost four years and they never even got to the situation at least to repay complete interest amount year on year. The confidence of the family touched its nadir and they lost the hopes of repaying the loan amount. At the end they took a decision of selling their property and repaying the loan amount. In a bid to close their loan, they sold 10-12 acres of land and I think they left with another 3-4 acres of land that was not good for farming.

The family was so hard working, they did most of the farm work on their own and none in the family had any bad habit. But it was just unfortunate that one decision they made with a good intention got them to a worst situation of their life!!!!

Should we change or change our parents??

Whenever I go out to booze, eat, shopping or to a trip always I remember my parents.

Going back to my old days, when I was studying engineering our family income was approximately Rs. 30, 000 plus or minus 10K depending on the crop that year. My engineering fee was Rs. 7,500 and i use to take another Rs. 13,000 for other expenses like rent, food, exam fees. Fortunately I bought only one book in my engineering life and i should thank Shreekanth and Guru for helping me with books and notes.

So I always wonder how did my parents manage during that time as they were spending most of the money on me. When i ask my parents, they just say we were spending less that time (even now they do the same ). They cut down on most of the expenses and stopped using labors to work in the field and instead they did most of the work on their own. Reduced usage of inorganic fertilizers also saved them lots of money. They saved every rupee and made sure that I could complete my studies.

Now the time has changed, we get better income from agriculture and me as well earning good money. I tried to change my parents a bit asking them to buy some good some clothes, have food at a good restaurant. They never agree for it and tell me that we are happy the way we are.

When they visited Bangalore recently, I wanted to take them to restaurant and have some nice food. My dad asked me how much they will charge, i said may be around Rs. 1000 for four people. My dad suddenly replied in north karntaka language "manjal hogli ondu savir rupayige dinasi tandre ondu tingalu tinnabahudu, adenu horage hogi tintiya, summane maneli aduge madli iru (If you buy groceries for Rs. 1000, you can eat for month. Why do you want to go out and eat?)

Whereas if we look at us, we freak out every week end and spend lots of money for food, entertainment, travel....while spending freely, I always think about my parents and ask myself whether I am doing right or wrong. At the end I get convinced and the reason is we live in different world and it demands this change. On the other side i also learnt that let us not try to change our parents, its better to leave them the way they are so that they find happiness in it.

I believe this might be the case with most of us........

Can we do a bit to eradicate corruption?

Can we do a bit to eradicate corruption?
I first time bribed when I was 18 years old. It happened one day at Tahashildhar (Sub registrar) office; my CET counseling dates were nearing and I was running since 2 months to get my caste certificate done. Though I am son of a farmer, I need to submit income tax, sales tax clearance certificates from respective departments along with the family income certificate from Tahashildhar to get a caste certificate. I had collected all other documents except family income certificate and to get that I was waiting in the Tahashlidhar office from morning 8. The peon in the office asked me for some money and I said why should I give when all my documents are perfect. Then he said "Sahebru busy iddare aamele baa" (Tahashildhar is busy and you come later). I went in the afternoon around 2PM and he again said come at 4PM. There was an appointment given at DC office the next day and I had to go to Bagalkot to submit the documents. I thought let me give a last try and came back again at 4PM and I requested him to get the certificate. This time he said, you come tomorrow as the officer is going for some other meeting and he can't see your document now. I almost broke down that time and was helpless, I pleaded him like anything trying to make him understand the effort I had put and also the next day is the submission. At the end he said, you give Rs. 100 and will try to get you family income certificate at 5PM. I just had Rs. 110 and gave him Rs. 100 and kept the remaining for bus charge to my native. When I went there at 5PM, the certificate was ready!!! The money has made the magic but unfortunately I had to stand there for a full day with empty stomach as I had not even taken lunch that day. I felt, should have given money in the morning itself. This was the first time in my life I had to bribe but there was no other way.
After this I did bribe again for couple of times at different occasions and now since few years I have learnt a bit on how to get the work done without bribing and was successful as well. One such incident happened few months back, I wanted to get my EC(Encumbrance Certificate) and went to sub registrar office. I filled the form and gave it to clerk, he asked me for Rs. 150. I politely asked him, sir, what's the govt fees, he said Rs. 35. Then I questioned, why are you asking for Rs. 150? He said, if you want it today then you need to pay Rs. 150 otherwise you come and collect after 3 days. I paid Rs. 30, took the receipt and collected the EC after 3 days and all was well :-).
The point is government has set certain rules and if we go as per the rules then at least we can minimize the corruption. We need to have patience to work with govt officials, if we follow the rules things might take few days extra but we can definitely bring a change.
Let us do our bit to eradicate the corruption in our country.

Did I do a mistake?

It is more than 7 years I started working in the technology field and I wonder every day whether I did a right thing by getting into this field. Niether I know this field nor I destined to join but it just happened. If I go back to my old memories, when I was studying my 7th standard in a Govt., Kannada medium school at my village, our teacher was asking each one of us what do you want to become. When my turn came, I just said sir I want to become a teacher because I never knew anything good other than that. I stood 2nd in 7th standard and was a topper in 10th board examination not only for my school but also for the examination center where in 8 to 10 neighboring village school students write the exams from the same center. This changed my life and everybody started pressurizing my parents to send me to study science. Unfortunately I had to go for science though I was interested in history and political science.

At 2nd PUC I did marginally good and I took engineering course as most of my friends were only talking about either medicine or engineering. This time I was influenced by my friends. Honestly while studying engineering I changed my dream of becoming a teacher and wanted to become a politician.

I managed to finish my engineering degree in 4 years and after that options were very less and I couldn't afford to go for any higher studies due to financial constraints. This took me directly to Bangalore and finally I landed in technical job after lots of cycling.

As mentioned in the beginning I have already travelled 7 years in this field and never enjoyed this job and only the money which I get doing this job keeps me going. I feel every day, after 10th should have taken arts subjects(History, political science...) and stayed back at my native which would have given me a platform to do what intended to do.

I wonder every day, did I do a mistake by joining science after 10th standard?
